 SOUL ASYLUM

Assalamualaikum and hello everyone! It's been a while since I last updated my blog. Currently I'm studying in Uitm Alor Gajah and a student in Dip of Mass Communication. As you can see from the title above, Runaway Train is basically a song by Soul Asylum. Now I would like to share my own perspective regarding this song.

This is my first time listening to this song. When I first listened to this song, the rhythm is quite catchy so I assumed that this might be a happy song. Without looking at the lyrics, I try to guess the story written in this song but to be very honest, I could hardly understand the lyrics well but I do know some of the words. Still, I couldn't grab on what this song is all about. I first thought that this song is about someone who just had his/her breakups and he/she wanted to escape from reality with a train. When I discovered the lyrics, I begin to understand more about this song.

Call you up in the middle of the night
like a firefly without a light
you were there like a slow torch burning
I was a key that could use a little turning

so tired that I couldn't even sleep
so many secret i couldn't keep
I promised myself i wouldn't weep
one more promise i couldn't keep

it seems no one can help me now
i'm in too deep theres no way out
this time i have really had myself astray

First of all,  he/she wanted someone to be there for them and be their guidance. He/she felt exhausted of their problems and I personally thinks that he/she kept the problems to themselves and no one knows about it. He/she feels like he/she can't keep it all to themselves any longer. From what I personally understands, the problem that he/she faced were so hard that he/she felt so frustrated by it. He/she can't ran away from his/her problems and he/she let their feelings went overboard and let themselves go astray.
 Runaway train never going back
wrong way on a one-way track
seems like i should be getting somewhere
somehow i'm neither here nor there

From this lyrics, I think that he/she were trying to run away somewhere by getting on a train. What he/she really wanted to do was running away from their problems which brings them depressions and sorrows and he/she had no intention on going back to where they came from. He/she knows that this is a wrong decision but he/she insisted on doing it. He/she thought that by running away, their frustration, depression and sadness would fade away but little did he/she knows that it follows he/she wherever they goes.
can you help me remember how to smile
make it somehow all seem worthwhile
how on earth that i get so jaded
life's mysteries seem so faded

He/she wanted his life to be like they were used to be before. He/she felt like it was a long time ago since they had a happy life. He/she wanted to feel happy again so that they will live their life to the fullest.

i can go where no one else can go
i know what no one else know
here i am just drowning in the rain
with a ticket for the runaway train
He/she might be thinking of suicide to run away from their problems. The line "i can go where no one else can go" showed that he/she were referring to the after life. However, he still couldn't decide on which is the best for him/her. Whether to actually commit suicide or by being strong and faced the problems by themselves.

here everythings seems cut and dry
day and night earth and sky
somehow i just don't believe it

bought a ticket for a runaway train
like a mad man laughing at the rain
little out of touch, a little insane
it's just easier that dealing with the pain

He/she finds themselves in sorrow and depression. He/she became worst by doing things that were crazy or in other words things that doesn't makes sense. He/she were slowly damaging themselves and cut themselves off the world by being alone.

runaway train never coming back
runaway train tearin' up the track
runaway train burning in my vains
i runaway but it always seem the same

Last but not least, we should not run away from our problems and no matter how hard and tough it is, we should be brave enough to face the problems by ourselves. Running away from your problems will not solve it. There is so many ways to deal with our problems. I used to love this quote by Robert H. Schuller, he said that "Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines".
